foil series

A person or thing that makes another's characteristics more noticeable by contrast

The Foil series is an investigation into visual and tactile counterpoint, centering on how opposing elements elevate one another through deliberate juxtaposition. Exploring the philosophical concept of the "foil," the collection demonstrates how raw contrast can heighten presence—transforming stark differences in tone, surface, and dimension into a harmonious aesthetic dialogue.

Housed within custom hardwood weaving frames, each composition integrates three distinct techniques: fine plain-woven cotton, dimensional hand-knotted fiber, and woven walnut timber veneer. A striking tonal contrast immediately takes hold between the deep, rich hues of the walnut and the luminous purity of the natural fiber. Beyond color, the work creates a tension in relief, where the flat, architectural precision of the smooth veneer sits directly against lush, hand-knotted cotton that emerges from the frame in rich tactile volume.

Rather than competing for prominence, these opposing forces actively amplify one another. The rigid, flat composure of the wood makes the organic softness of the fiber pop with dynamic energy, proving that true depth is revealed when contrasting worlds meet.
