Behind the Scenes: A Day in the Life of a Textile Artist
Welcome to my atelier, where every day is a whirlwind of creativity, inspiration, and of course, a touch of chaos.
Today, I'm giving you an exclusive behind-the-scenes peek into the world of a textile artist—spoiler alert: it's not always as glamorous as it seems!
First things first, let me introduce you to my trusty sidekicks: my Fiskars scissors, adjustable stool, clothes rack and, of course, my faithful Crocs.
These tools are essential to my craft. Whether I'm snipping fringe with precision, tying knots, or sitting for hours on end lost in a world of threads, they are always by my side, helping me bring my visions to life.
As for weaving needles and other tools, I generally don't use them as I much prefer to use my hands and feel the fibers... but that's just my personal preference!
Now, let's talk about my atelier setup. It's a cozy little space filled with fibers, fabrics, wood, texture, and endless possibilities.
My clothes rack serves as both work stand and organization, holding my loom or the dowel I'm working on as well as a range of materials just waiting to be transformed into something magical.
When I create I like to have all the fibers I curated at an arms reach.
As my process is very fluid and intuitive, I immerse myself in these and my hands grab what they feel like it's going to work at a given moment.
But enough about the setup, let's get down to business!
A typical day in the life of a textile artist usually starts with a cup of coffee (or two), followed by a quick scan of my to-do list.
I always start with checking emails and social media... and that's screen time done for me!
Unless a client reaches out, I don't go back to the laptop until the end of the working day, when I check for emails or inquiries that might have (hopefully) came through during the day.
From there, it's all about diving headfirst into a project.
Sometimes, inspiration strikes like lightning, and I find myself lost in a frenzy of creativity, knotting and weaving with wild abandon.
Other times, it's more of a slow burn, with ideas simmering quietly in the background until they're ready to burst onto the scene.
And let's not forget about the inevitable challenges that come with the territory.
From stubborn knots to pesky deadlines, there's always something trying to throw a wrench in my plans.
But hey, that's all part of the fun, right?
Despite the occasional hiccups, there's nothing quite like the feeling of bringing a piece of art to life.
It's a labor of love, a testament to patience, perseverance, and passion.
And when that final knot is tied, that last thread is woven, it's like magic—a tangible reminder of the power of creativity to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary.
So there you have it—a day in the life of a textile artist.
It's messy, it's chaotic, but above all, it's incredibly rewarding.
And hey, if you ever find yourself in need of a little creative inspiration, you know where to find me—surrounded by threads, wood, and of course, my trusty Crocs.
